Building History
The location of our boutique was built in 1876. This landmark opened as a general store and stayed that way until 1984. The general store sold anything from food to clothing. In 1889 it was known as the “Fireproof House” as it was made of brick with an iron roof and had two fire doors. A lot of fires occurred on Queen Street and this building certainly stood the test of time. In 1929, the back of the store was occupied by a lawyer, Mr. Duncan McCuaig, the father of the former mayor of Barrie, Janice Laking. The back room also has a large safe as the building may have at one time been a bank. Upstairs housed a millinery business that made the most beautiful hats. In 1984, it became an antique store. It was most recently known as a high end clothing store for woman called Cabo and has now changed hands to our Aleksandra Boutique.
